Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg

For the Apple Filling

  • 2 medium apples, peeled and diced
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

For the Vanilla Glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.
  • In a separate small bowl, mix warm milk, melted butter, and egg, then add to the dry ingredients. Stir until the mixture forms a dough.

Kneading

  • Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for about 5-7 minutes until it's smooth and elastic.
  • Place it in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes or until doubled in size.

Apple Filling

  • In a bowl, mix diced apples, cinnamon, brown sugar, and lemon juice. Set aside to allow the flavors to meld.

Shaping the Kringle

  • Once the dough has risen, roll it out into a rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Slice both long sides of the dough into strips (around 1 inch wide) but leave the center untouched.
  • Spoon the apple filling down the center, then fold the strips over the filling, alternating sides to create a braid effect. Tuck the ends under to secure.

Baking

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the Kringle on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.

Glazing

  • While the Kringle is cooling, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • Drizzle the vanilla glaze over the warm Kringle, and let it set for a few minutes before slicing.

Notes

For best results, use fresh apples for a delightful tartness, and don’t rush the dough rising process for a perfect flaky texture. Experiment with spices for a unique twist.
