Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 4 large green tomatoes Select firm, green tomatoes.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • as needed cup vegetable oil For frying.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Wash the green tomatoes thoroughly and slice them into 1/4-inch thick rounds.
  • In one bowl, combine the flour, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. In the second bowl, pour in the buttermilk. In a third bowl, add the cornmeal.

Breading

  • Dip each tomato slice into the flour mixture, shaking off excess. Immerse it in the buttermilk, and finally coat it with the cornmeal, pressing lightly to ensure it sticks.

Cooking

  • In a large skillet, pour enough vegetable oil to cover the bottom and heat it over medium-high heat.
  • Carefully place the breaded tomato slices in the skillet and fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.
  • Once cooked, remove the fried green tomatoes from the skillet and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to absorb any excess oil.

Serving

  • Enjoy your crispy, tangy fried green tomatoes while they’re hot!

Notes

Serve alongside Southern-style coleslaw, a zesty dipping sauce, grilled meats, or a refreshing cucumber salad. Pair with sweet tea.
