For the Layers

  • 2 cups fresh or canned cherries (pitted and halved) Opt for ripe cherries for best flavor.
  • 1.5 cups cake (pound cake or sponge cake), cut into pieces or cubes Store-bought or homemade.

Preparation

  • In a mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth.
  • Gradually add in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, mixing until completely blended.
  • Gently fold in the whipped cream until no streaks remain.

Layering

  • Place some cake pieces at the bottom of a clear glass bowl or individual serving cups.
  • Add a generous layer of the cream cheese filling.
  • Top that layer with a handful of cherries, distributing them evenly.
  • Continue layering with cake, cream cheese filling, and cherries until the serving dish is filled.
  • Finish with a dollop of whipped cream and a few cherry halves for decoration.

Chilling

  • Cover the trifle and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving to allow flavors to meld.

Notes

Select ripe cherries for the best flavor. You can use store-bought cake, but homemade enhances the experience. This dessert can be made a day in advance for convenience. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, though the cake may soften over time.
