Ingredients

For the Filling

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese, shredded
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil for caramelizing onions
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme or 1 teaspoon dried thyme

For the Wreath

  • 1 loaf bread dough store-bought or homemade
  • 1 egg beaten for egg wash

Instructions

Caramelize the Onions

  • Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add sliced onions, salt, and pepper, and cook slowly for about 20-25 minutes. Stir occasionally until onions are golden brown and caramelized. Mix in thyme before removing from heat.

Prepare the Dough

  • Roll out the bread dough on a floured surface into a large rectangle. Cut it into strips (1-1.5 inches wide) using a pizza cutter or knife.

Assemble the Wreath

  • Take one strip, place a spoonful of caramelized onions and a sprinkle of Gruyère cheese in the center. Fold the strip, encasing the filling and place it on a baking sheet in the shape of a wreath, continuing until you’ve used up all the strips.

Egg Wash

  • Brush the wreath with beaten egg to give it a beautiful golden color when baked.

Bake

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the bread is nicely browned and the cheese is bubbly.

Serve and Enjoy

  • Once cooled slightly, place your bread wreath on a platter and serve warm. Enjoy it fresh from the oven, alongside your favorite dips or a crisp salad!

Notes

Slow cooking the onions is key for developing their sweetness. Experimenting with different cheeses is encouraged!
