Ingredients
  

For the casserole

  • 8 slices slices of bread (preferably brioche or challah) Using brioche or challah will give the best texture.
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk Almond milk can be used for a lighter version.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 cups apples, peeled and diced A mix of sweet and tart apples is recommended.
  • 1 cup caramel sauce
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts (optional) Omit for a nut-free option.
  • Butter for greasing

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter.
  • Cut the bread into cubes (about 1-inch pieces) and layer half of it in the bottom of the dish.

Mixing the Custard

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and brown sugar until well combined.

Adding Apples

  • Fold in the diced apples and chopped walnuts (if using) into the custard mixture, ensuring everything is evenly coated.

Layering the Casserole

  • Pour the custard and apple mixture over the bread cubes in the baking dish.
  • Add the remaining bread cubes on top, pressing down gently to soak up the custard.

Baking

  • Drizzle the caramel sauce over the top layer of bread.
  • Cover the dish loosely with foil, and bake in the preheated oven for about 30 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.

Serving

  • Take it out of the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
  • Top with whipped cream and extra caramel if desired.

Notes

Store leftovers tightly wrapped in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Can also be frozen for about a month. Reheat in the oven or microwave.
