Dough Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened Ensure butter is softened, not melted.
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg

Filling

  • 1/2 cup blackberry preserves Can substitute with other fruit preserves.
  • 1/2 cup cherry preserves Can substitute with other fruit preserves.

For Serving

  • powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Stir until well-blended.
  • In another bowl, soften the butter with a mixer until creamy.
  • Add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture. Mix well before adding the milk and egg.
  • Knead the mixture gently until it forms a soft dough. If it's too sticky, add a little flour until you reach the right consistency.
  • Divide the dough into small balls (about the size of golf balls). Flatten each ball in your palm and make a small indentation in the center.
  • Spoon a small amount of blackberry and cherry preserves into each indentation.

Baking

  • Place the kolaches on a lined baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until lightly golden.
  • Allow to cool slightly before dusting with powdered sugar.
  • Enjoy warm or at room temperature, perfect with a cup of tea or coffee!

Notes

To enjoy later, store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. They can be frozen for up to a month. Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes to restore freshness.
