  • 6 cups Apples, peeled, cored, and sliced Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for better flavor.
  • 1 cup Sugar Adjust according to the sweetness of the apples.
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon Nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon All-purpose flour

For the Topping

  • 2 tablespoons Butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, 1/2 cup of sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour. Toss to coat the apples evenly.
  • Transfer the apple mixture into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, spreading it evenly.

Topping

  • In a separate bowl, mix together the remaining sugar, baking powder, salt, milk, and melted butter. Stir until well combined.
  • Pour this mixture over the apples in the baking dish.
  • Using a fork, gently press down the topping into the apple filling to create the unique 'pandowdy' texture.

Baking

  • Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for about 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  • Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For the best flavor, use a combination of sweet and tart apples. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days. To reheat, microwave portions for 30-60 seconds or warm the entire dish in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 15-20 minutes.
