  • 4 cups cubed day-old bread (such as challah, brioche, or white bread) Day-old bread provides the best texture
  • 2 large apples (peeled, cored, and diced) Mix of tart and sweet varieties recommended
  • 2 cups milk
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar Adjust according to apple sweetness
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 pinch salt

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine cubed bread and diced apples.

Make the Custard

  • In another bowl, whisk together milk, sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.

Combine and Bake

  • Pour the custard mixture over the bread and apples. Stir gently and let it soak for about 10 minutes.
  • Grease a baking dish and pour the mixture into it, spreading evenly.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
  • Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving, topping with your favorite options.

Notes

Using day-old bread enhances texture. You can experiment with nuts or dried fruits for additional flavor. Store leftovers in an airtight container for 3-4 days and reheat as needed.
