Kitchen Equipment Needed:
- Large skillet
- Spatula
- Mixing bowl
- Knife and cutting board
Ingredients:
For the Hamburger Steak:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the Onion Gravy:
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Directions:
- Prepare the Hamburger Patties:
- In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
- Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into oval-shaped patties, about 1/2-inch thick.
- Cook the Hamburger Patties:
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the hamburger patties to the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until they are browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
- Make the Onion Gravy:
- In the same skillet, add the butter and sliced onions. Cook the onions over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until they are soft and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir to combine. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes to cook off the raw flour taste.
- Gradually pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until the gravy has thickened, about 5-7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Smother the Hamburger Steaks:
- Return the cooked hamburger patties to the skillet with the onion gravy. Spoon some of the gravy over the top of each patty.
- Cover the skillet and let the patties simmer in the gravy for an additional 5-10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
- Serve:
- Transfer the smothered hamburger steaks to serving plates. Spoon extra gravy over the top and garnish with chopped fresh parsley, if desired.
- Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite side dish. Enjoy this comforting and flavorful meal!
