Kitchen Equipment Needed:
- Medium saucepan
- Wooden spoon or silicone spatula
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Cutting board
- Knife
- Potato masher or fork (optional, for mashing strawberries)
- Airtight container (for storage)
Ingredients:
- 1 pound (450g) fresh strawberries, hulled and quartered
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
- 1/4 cup water (optional, for a thinner sauce)
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (optional, for a thicker sauce)
Directions:
- Prepare the Strawberries:
- Wash, hull, and quarter the strawberries. If you prefer a smoother sauce, you can mash some of the strawberries with a potato masher or fork.
- Cook the Sauce:
- In a medium saucepan, combine the strawberries, granulated sugar, and lemon juice. If you prefer a thinner sauce, add 1/4 cup of water.
- Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the strawberries release their juices and the sugar dissolves, about 5-7 minutes.
- Simmer and Thicken:
- Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. If you prefer a thicker sauce, mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water to create a slurry, and stir it into the simmering strawberries.
- Continue to cook, stirring frequently, until the sauce reaches your desired consistency, about 10-15 minutes. The sauce will thicken further as it cools.
- Add Vanilla (Optional):
- Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract, if using. This adds a lovely depth of flavor to the sauce.
- Cool and Store:
- Allow the strawberry sauce to cool to room temperature. Transfer it to an airtight container and refrigerate until ready to use. The sauce will keep in the refrigerator for up to one week.
Enjoy this bright and flavorful Homemade Strawberry Sauce as a perfect topping for pancakes, waffles, ice cream, cheesecakes, or any of your favorite desserts!
