Creamy Baked Mac and Cheese is a delightfully rich dish that’s filled and topped with a luscious layer of melted cheese. It’s not heavy or overly greasy either. I think it’s a perfect comfort food for any season, and if you’re not a fan of a particular type of cheese, feel free to omit or substitute it.

It will still be undeniably delicious! If you’re looking for a creamy & indulgent meal that’s not overly complicated, you’ve come to the right place. When you make a tender pasta and pair it with a velvety cheese sauce, you get the perfect dish. The addition of a crispy breadcrumb topping just sends it over the top. I’ve really been in the mood for some comfort food, and this dreamy mac and cheese reminds me of cozy nights in. Not a fan of breadcrumbs? Don’t worry, it’s still delicious without them.

Kitchen Equipment Needed:

  • Large pot
  • Colander
  • Whisk
  • Medium saucepan
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Baking dish (9×13 inch)
  • Wooden spoon or spatula

Ingredients:

For the Mac and Cheese:

  • 1 pound elbow macaroni
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups milk (whole milk or 2%)
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)

For the Topping:

  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cook the macaroni: In a large pot, cook the macaroni according to package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  3. Make the cheese sauce: In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute, stirring constantly, to create a roux. Gradually whisk in the milk and continue to cook, whisking constantly, until the mixture thickens and starts to bubble, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Add the cheeses: Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the cheddar, mozzarella, and Gruyère cheeses until melted and smooth. Add the Dijon mustard, salt, pepper, and smoked paprika (if using), and stir to combine.
  5. Combine pasta and sauce: In the large pot, combine the cooked macaroni with the cheese sauce, stirring gently to coat the pasta evenly.
  6. Prepare the topping: In a small bowl, combine the panko breadcrumbs with the melted butter and grated Parmesan cheese. Mix well to coat the breadcrumbs.
  7. Assemble the dish: Pour the mac and cheese into a 9×13 inch baking dish. Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture evenly over the top.
  8. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
  9. Serve: Let the baked mac and cheese cool for a few minutes before serving.

Enjoy this Creamy Baked Mac and Cheese, a comforting classic that’s sure to bring warmth and satisfaction to any meal!
