Kitchen Equipment Needed:
- Mixing bowl
- Whisk
- Oven-safe baking dish or individual ramekins
- Baking pan large enough to hold the baking dish or ramekins for a water bath
- Aluminum foil
- Wire rack for cooling (optional)
Ingredients:
- 4 large eggs
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- Ground nutmeg, for garnish (optional)
Directions:
- Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C). Place an oven rack in the middle position.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs and granulated sugar until well combined and slightly frothy.
- Gradually whisk in the whole milk, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt until the mixture is smooth and homogeneous.
- Pour the custard mixture into an oven-safe baking dish or divide it among individual ramekins.
- Place the baking dish or ramekins in a larger baking pan. Carefully pour hot water into the larger baking pan, creating a water bath that reaches about halfway up the sides of the baking dish or ramekins.
- Lightly sprinkle ground nutmeg over the top of the custard, if desired.
- Cover the baking dish or ramekins with aluminum foil, crimping the edges to seal tightly.
- Carefully transfer the baking pan to the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the custard is set around the edges but still slightly jiggly in the center.
- Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the custard is fully set and lightly golden brown on top.
- Remove the baking dish or ramekins from the water bath and place them on a wire rack to cool slightly.
- Serve the Amish Baked Custard warm or chilled, and enjoy the creamy, comforting goodness with every spoonful!
